Boys runner-up at Regionals; advance to State Finals for first time in 27 years

Game Date
Oct 31, 2020

The Fowlerville Boys Cross Country team went into the MHSAA Regional Final in Dewitt on Saturday with one goal in mind: advancing to the MHSAA State Finals as a team.  The course conditions and competition were tough, but the Boys accomplished their goal, placing 2nd overall scoring 74 points and punching their ticket to Michigan International Speedway to race against the best in Division II.  This is the first time since 1993 that Fowlerville has sent a full Boys team to the State Finals and only the 2nd time in the last 56 years!  Third-ranked St. Johns won the Regional Championship scoring 21 points, while Mason joined the list of qualifying teams scoring 94 points in third.

The Gladiators were led by Zachary Curd (Jr) and his solid 3rd place performance.  Curd completed the wind swept course in 16:33 to secure his 9th top 3 finish in 10 meets this season.  This is Zachary's second All-Region honor after placing 10th in the 2019 Regional Final.  Brett Marschall (So) closed down on a few competitors in the final 400m to secure 10th place overall in 16:56.  Brett earned All-Region honors and was the highest placing Fowlerville sophomore since Chris Davis ('18) finished 12th in 2015.  Tyler Perras (Jr) also chased down the pack in the closing 400m of the race to earn 15th place in 17:07.  Tyler's efforts were rewarded with the final All-Region honor in this race.  This is the most All-Region athletes Fowlerville has had in 27 years.

But the race belonged to Trevor Peterson (Sr).  Trevor had a lot riding on his mind as he entered the Regional Final, including keeping the team together and focused on one final push towards a season long dream.  But he put all nerves and thoughts aside, as the 4-year Senior Captain was the only Gladiator to set a personal best time on the Dewitt course.  Trevor raced to a 16:52 and placed 25th overall, securing the team's 2nd place finish and a long awaited trip to the State Finals.

A trio of first-time Regional Finalist would help put this 2020 team into the history books as Ben Showerman (So) ran an impressive 18:15, placing 38th overall, Brock Howard (Jr) was 48th in 18:45 and Morgan Harman (So) was 50th in 18:56.

With their runner-up finish, the Gladiators have been placed in the Section 2 race of the Boys Division II State Finals on Friday November 6th at Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn, MI.  The Section 2 race, which will feature each of the Regional Champions and runners-up from the 9 regions, will start at 2:00p.  More information on the State Finals, including spectator information, time schedule, tickets and directions, are available on the MHSAA website (www.mhsaa.com).

Thank you for everyone's support this season and we hope to see you in Brooklyn!
