9/6/20 Athletic Update

This has been an exciting Labor Day weekend! As you probably already know, MHSAA member schools received guidance Thursday in reference to the return of competition in all fall sports. This guidance came after Governor Whitmer signed Executive Order 175 and 176. The purpose of this update is to explain to you what we know.

  • As of 12:01 Friday morning, Soccer teams in our region are permitted to begin competition.
  • Volleyball teams are permitted to begin practice/competition indoors on Wednesday, September 9th.
  • The first JV Football game will take place on Thursday, September 17th with the first Varsity Football game taking place September 18th.
  • JH athletics: Cross Country is still on track to begin this week, Volleyball will be reviewed by league athletic directors.

It is important to note that MULTIPLE changes are taking place in terms of schedules. Part of this is due to the needs of fitting in League competitions; part of this is due to limits on contests in a week, the number of total contests in a year, and more. We have been updating our school website and will continue to do so throughout the weekend and possibly beyond. We will do our very best to make any necessary changes AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

Please review the following DOCUMENT for more details, this one-pager should help families answer many of your questions.

Executive Order 176 REQUIRES the following regarding masks, we are seeking further interpretations and guidance on this language in the new order moving forward.

  1. Athletes participating in an organized sport, while on the field of play, are not subject to the social distancing requirements of this order found in sections 2(a) and 6(a)(1), but instead must maintain six feet of distance from one another to the extent compatible with that organized sport, and wear a facial covering except when swimming. Sports organizers shall ensure that athletes comply with this subsection for each organized sporting event.

Thank you and keep following the rules so our kids can play!!!
